2006 Outstanding Young
Wilmingtonian (OYW)
Ciro
Poppiti III has been named the 2006 Outstanding Young Wilmingtonian by
the
Wilmington Jaycees organization. Poppiti, a resident of Wilmington
and the proprietor of USA Distributors of Delaware, has a longstanding
record of volunteering in the Wilmington community.
Among
Poppiti’s volunteer activities have been: Teaching at-risk 6th
and 7th grade youth at the Nativity Prep School in
Wilmington; Advising the Delaware Children’s Theatre and coordinating
fundraising events for the DCT; Managing a national touring exhibit, Una
Segreta, to Wilmington (Una Segreta told the story of WWII Italian
immigrants and how they were treated in America); Chairman of the St.
Anthony’s Italian Festival Cultural Committee - establishing the first
Family Concert; Spearheading the first “Vendemmia da Vinci” fall
festival, which brought Italian culture and heritage to the Riverfront
of the City of Wilmington.

Poppiti was nominated for OYW by Chris Coons, County Executive for New
Castle County. “Ciro’s broad, selfless and sustained service to others,
combined with his tireless dedication to promoting and supporting
Wilmington, make him an excellent and deserving candidate for this
honor,” said Coons. “He exemplifies the best tradition of civic
engagement in the service of others by young business leaders in our
community.”
For
the past 65 years, the Wilmington Jaycees have honored individuals who
have gone to extraordinary means to better themselves and their
community. The OYW award recognizes exceptional achievements or
contributions in a nominee’s chosen field, organization, community,
state, or nation.
Poppiti and his wife, Laura, live in Wilmington with their two children,
Jake and Louise.

For over 60
years, the Wilmington Jaycees have honored individuals in our community that
have gone to extraordinary means to better themselves and their community.
The award recognizes exceptional achievements or contributions in a
nominee’s chosen field, organizations, community, state, or nation.
The Jaycees are looking for nominees whose outstanding humanitarian
efforts exemplify the line of the Jaycee Creed that states, “Service to
humanity is the best work of life.” Nominees
must have been 21-39 years old and not have turned 40 before June 1, 2006.The individual who is honored with the
Outstanding Young Wilmingtonian Award is then
submitted to the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce as a possible
selection to the Ten Outstanding
Young Americans, TOYA. Some past TOYA honorees have included, Richard
Nixon, Christopher Reeve, Dave Tiberi, Michelle Tafoya and Robin Hartle.

Congratulations to Ciro Poppiti who was presented with the 2006 Outstanding
Young Wilmingtonian Award. We are proud to present the award to him. He
will now go on to compete at the National level for the Ten Outstanding
Young Americans.
